Are These Bed Bug Bites?

We get bitten by bugs all the time. There are a lot of bugs that like to bite us. This is even more true for children who spend a lot more time outside than we do. So, we don’t usually pay attention to a few bites here and there. But, when bites begin to add up, could it be a sign that you have a bed bug infestation? It may be. Let’s take a look at the problem.

Bed Bug Bites Checklist

If you have unidentified bug bites, this list should help you zero in on the problem:

  • Do you have another pest problem? It is often hard to tell the difference between bed bug bites and bites left by other bugs. One of the best ways to determine what bug is biting you is to connect that bug to other pest control issues. Have you seen fleas on your pets? Have you seen rodent droppings in your home? If you have, those bites are more likely to be flea bites.
  • Where are the bites appearing? Different bugs have different preferences and different levels of access. Chiggers will bite you on your waistline or under your armpits and on the backs of your knees. Fleas will usually bite you on your feet, ankles, and lower legs. Bed bugs tend to bite on the side, neck, back, and face.
  • Is there a pattern to the bites? Bed bugs feed multiple times in a night. For this reason, bite marks will appear in lines or pathways on the skin. Pests that feed once, like mosquitoes, will leave many random bites on the skin.
  • The best way to figure out whether or not bed bugs are biting you is to do a search for bed bug signs. When these pests infest a home, they will leave tiny black droppings, black patches, blood staining, brown stains from dried blood, insect skins, and tiny white eggs in areas of infestation. Look for these on sheets, pillowcases, bedding, mattresses and box spring seams, crevices of your beds, backboards, baseboards, outlet covers, and the stitching on upholstered furniture. You may also see these tiny, six-legged bugs crawling around, or clumped together. They may appear pale, tan, or rusty-brown in color depending on their age.
