How to Prevent Mosquito Bites in Georgia

In the spring and summer in Georgia, dealing with mosquitoes is inevitable. To steer clear of mosquito bites, there are a few different methods of protection:

  • Plan to avoid outdoor activities at dawn and dusk. Times of low light see the highest activity.
  • Do away with still water sources in your yard that could be attracting mosquitoes.
  • Limit exposed skin while outdoors.
  • Use EPA-approved insect spray to ward them off, but ask a pediatrician before use on children.

What Clothing Will Keep Mosquitoes Away?

Mosquitoes will take advantage of even a tiny amount of exposed skin. People usually find mosquito bites on their arms, legs, hands, feet, and neck. We recommend that you wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, ideally tucked into your socks, to reduce the amount of open space where mosquitoes can bite you. Research has shown that wearing brighter clothes can keep mosquitoes away. It is more difficult to wear long-sleeved clothing for mosquito protection in the heat of the summer. If you decide to leave exposed skin, use an EPA-approved bug spray to prevent bites.

How to Prevent Mosquito Bites While Sleeping

Many people have been attacked by mosquitoes overnight on a camping trip or a night with the windows open. A few ways that you can prevent this from happening are:

  1. Set up mosquito nets before going to bed.
  2. Wear bright or long-sleeved clothing.
  3. Turn on fans while asleep.
  4. Use an EPA-registered bug spray.
  5. Shower before bed to clean off any scents.
  6. Keep your windows shut overnight.

How to Prevent Mosquito Bites on Dogs & Cats

Mosquitoes don’t just bite humans. They love to feed on small animals and birds, and will gladly target your pets. Ask your vet about which mosquito repellents are safe for your dog or cat. Be wary of taking your dog for a walk at dawn or dusk—mosquitoes are most active at these times. Always keep watch of your pets for signs of excessive scratching during mosquito season. You should also monitor your yard for accumulating standing water.
